Business Council of Alabama Endorses McAdams for State School Board

I am honored and excited to announce that I have been endorsed by the Business Council of Alabama for the District 8 State School Board race. Local business executives on the Business Council of Alabama Regional Advisory Committee interviewed me and the other candidates last month. According to BCA's web page, "the BCA is a non-partisan statewide business association representing the interests and concerns of nearly 1 million working Alabamians through its member companies and its partnership with the Chamber of Commerce Association of Alabama. The BCA is Alabama’s exclusive affiliate to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the National Association of Manufacturers."

Why am I Running for State School Board?

People have asked me "why would you subject yourself to the hassle of running for, and possibly serving on the State School Board?" That's a legitimate question. The truth is simple: because I've seen the tremendous impact education can have on a kid (me) and a family. My parents grew up poor in rural Cullman County. My Dad had to drop out of school after the 8th grade to help earn money for his family after his Dad was killed in an accident. He said when he joined the Army shortly after turning seventeen and saw electric lights and flushing toilets, he knew they were going to have to "run him off". Sure enough, he stayed in the Army until retirement, and then returned the family to Cullman County where he and my Mom had both grown up. After retiring from the Army, Dad worked a second career on an assembly line in Cullman. Because a teacher, Mr. Edwin Guthrie, took a particular interest in me, and pushed me, I received an appointment to the US Military Academy at West Point. Attending and graduating from West Point changed my life, and changed the trajectory of my family. I was the first in my family to earn a Bachelors Degree, much less a Masters, but then my wife and I were able to pay for four years at the University of Alabama for all three of our children. All three of them graduated Alabama, and two of them are in Graduate School now. THAT is why I've been passionate about, and have worked to improve public education for decades. That's why I'm running for the State School Board.
